Welcome to another ESC review!
Today, we turn to one of the big 5 countries in the contest: Germany. S!sters will sing the song 'Sister', and intel tells me that this is at the top of James Charles' top 41 this year, but do I agree?
Here are my thoughts:
What I Like: Although this wasn't my favourite from the German selection, there were some nice elements that helped me understand why they inevitably won the show. The song does have nice production moments, such as the nice pre-chorus what slowly transcends into the booming chorus when they shout 'SISTER!'. Their voices are nice too, although a little off-harmony at times, and they do sell the song as much as they possibly can. I also liked the rotating platform they had for their performance, which I feel created a greater atmosphere and helped the song feel more deep than it actually is. Overall, its a song I wouldn't turn off if it came on.
What I Don't Like: I think we were all collectively disgusted when Aly Ryan managed to flop hard in the German national final, and I think that disgust is still within me. This song just feels so unnecessarily simple when compared to everything else. Even the title being the same as the artist just makes this song feel shallow, and its a shame after Michael Schulte created an impactful, emotional performance last year which felt authentic, and it feels like the German public are just trying to recreate that this year, but this doesn't hold that same emotional power what that had and it just feels so inauthentic as a result. To be honest, I feel like this version of Sister outsold. Also, there were parts where their harmonies weren't too great because there were a few times where one of them was off-beat and it sounded messy. Hopefully they can sort that by May.
Prediction: It's a shame that I can see Germany going back to the bottom of the table after last year's success, but I don't see a scenario where Sister finishes higher than 20th in the final, unfortunately. This is the big 5 entry I'm most concerned about in terms of success.
Final Score: 5.5/10
Summary: A song with charming elements and production flourishes that just can't quite deliver a 'moment' due to it being a little too generic.
