Let's do another review!
Today, we turn to Spain. Miki was one of the first ESC 2019 acts to be announced when 'La Venda' won Operación Triunfo. But what do I think?
Here are my thoughts:
What I Like: So looking back now that we have all 41 entries, we really needed this. Unlike so many of the other entries this is pure, unashamed fun! It has a communal party atmosphere too, if the audience love this in Tel Aviv the song will come to life even further and elevate what we already have. This would've been electric with the Lisbon crowd last year! On that point, its great to see the Spanish fans have an entry that's actually worthy of being celebrated, unlike previous years. Not only this, but I really think out of the up-tempo male entries this feels the most authentic and genuine to Miki and Spain as a country, which adds charm to the song.
What I Don't Like: Well, as much as I respect this there are a few personal reasons why this isn't up there with my favourites. I think the song feels very Spanish, which is a good thing for voters and casual viewers who like Spanish culture and regularly visit the country, but I've never really been into that Latin sound so this obviously isn't one of my instant favourites. I also think Miki could be a little more polished as a performer, its all very rigid and amateur performance wise for what I usually go for. I also think that the song can rub you up the wrong way depending on your mood, I know that when I've heard this in recaps over the last few months its annoyed the life out of me when I've been having a rubbish day instead of lifting me up, but in a fun environment such as Eurovision that shouldn't harm his chances.
Prediction: Okay, so this is a natural progression for Spain from last year and they are on the up after Tu Cancion. I do think that Spain have got lucky with the lack of uptempo songs and this could do really well. I think it's comfortably mid-table but could definitely challenge for the top 10 in the final if this is done right.
Final Score: 6/10
Summary: A fun, summery song we all needed this year that will fit the atmosphere in Tel Aviv perfectly when May rolls around, perfectly resembling the Spanish music scene and putting smiles on people across Europe. This is an underdog.
