Welcome back to the blog!
Its time for part 2 of my Eurovision 2019 after-show rundown. This will focus on the entries that placed between 30th-21st in the rundown, aka the songs I go back to time to time but aren't my favourites. Let's continue!
30 - Denmark
Leonora - Love Is Forever
Love Is Forever used to be a song we just don't talk about around these parts, but thankfully I don't detest it as much as I originally did. Its fine in my opinion now, I still wouldn't have put it through to the final but I get why people got it and it did come together better than I'd originally thought, portraying itself as more sweet and warm than in DMGP.
29 - Israel
Kobi Marimi - Home
Home is a song that climaxes at the right moment but the previous two minutes don't really provoke anything. Its beautifully shot and Kobi is vocally strong but I don't like the inclusion of the backing singers. Make it his moment instead of bringing in everyone else. Apart from that, a classy performance but not one that hooked me in for the full three minutes.
28 - Russia
Sergey Lazarev - Scream
Every now and again a song comes along that does well and you can understand why, but also can never get into. 'Scream' is performed very well and Sergey is brilliant as ever vocally, but this just never clicked with me. It feels quite shallow and I even think visually it didn't come together as well as I'd hoped.
27 - Belgium
Eliot - Wake Up
Everything about 'Wake Up' feels like a can do better. This song still annoys me so much because the chorus is so flat compared to the verses and this was amplified in the live. They had two huns at the back htiting drums for no reason, and Eliot had a weird oversized coat which did him no favours, and his vocals weren't hitting it either. It says a lot about how much I love those verses because with all the things this got wrong it should be way lower.
26 - Azerbaijan
Chingiz - Truth
Truth was hyped up so much in rehearsals and what we got was... okay? I reckon people had become so bored with the average stagings in the second semi that they forgot what something decent looked like. The song remains MOR alongside a MOR performance. It could've been way worse but they could've done way more with what they had.
25 - Estonia
Victor Crone - Storm
Honestly, I think I only hated this so much because of the semi-final it was in. Once it was in the final I found this to be a decent entry. It still could've been way better and there was obvious issues they hadn't ironed out even in the final performance, but Storm has its appeal and its a decent entry, even if its a few years too late.
24 - Sweden
John Lundvik - Too Late For Love
Too Late for Love is bascially everything I wrote about Storm. It annoys me that John is not mixed in with the mammas as well as they were in Melodifestivalen, as the gospel element is what adds more to this, and its almost like its being drowned out, and overall this just felt cheaper than it felt before. This was underwhelming for me but it was still a step in the right direction for Sweden.
23 - Czech Republic
Lake Malawi - Friend Of A Friend
Friend Of A Friend is a cringefest that absolutely shouldn't work but something about it is so endearing. The colourful performance is nice to watch and the ditty ends up being enjoyable in all areas. Its not a song that I'd go back and listen to the studio version but I think they did as well as they could with the live performance and staging.
22 - Austria
Pænda - Limits
I think I was one of the few Limits supporters going into the show, and although I knew it wasn't qualifying because friends watching the show were generally telling me 'this is awful' I was still rooting for it (I even dropped it a vote). Its not one I go back to now but watching it back this was beautifully staged and this didn't deserve to flop as badly as it did.
21 - Greece
Katerine Duska - Better Love
This is a big drop for what used to be a fan favourite of mine back in March. 'Better Love' is a radio friendly song and was in the very capable hands of Katerine. I just think its a song that's not made for a live performance. I also believe that Katerine's vocal had weakened slightly as the week had gone on and wasn't as impactful as it could be in the end.
That concludes part two of my new (and improved i hope) top 41! In the next post I'll run through my 20-11 and give my comments. There's also LOTS of blog posts on the way following on from this so watch out!
